Mylochromis sp."lateristriga makanjila" is living in sandy environments and in the intermediate zones from rocks to sand. It can be found along the eastern coast, from Ikombe in the northern part of the lake to Makanjila Point in the south. This variant (which also is called Mylochromis Mchuse) is from the northern part of the lake and it can be found in the neighbourhood of Lupingu. Itīs necessary to have some refuges in the aquarium in which they can hide. They also need a large tank with a lot of swimming space. About the middle of 2018 Thimo bought a young triplet of these fish, at that time they were about 10-12 cm in size. They moved to my (Johan) tank in september 2020. Meanwhile (mid- 2021) the male is grown up to a size of about 20 cm and the females to a size of about 14 and 18 cm. They show themselves well in this tank and most of the times the male is showing a beuatiful color. Up till now the male is very tolerant against his females, sometimes he tries to seduce one of them. They are also very tolerant against the other inhabitants however sometimes they are being chased away by some other fish in this tank like for example by the male Protomelas sp."hertae" and presently (at the beginning of March 2021) mainly by the male Otopharynx sp."auromarginatus margrette", which seems to have some problems to accept the male. Mylochromis sp."lateristriga makanjila" is mainly living on soft small cancroids, which they jig out of the sand. In the aquarium they are comfortable with any food. They take everything they get offered but mainly they get krill, mysis, shrimp-peas mix and sometimes artemia. |
